Few flowers cause as much excitement as peonies.
For four to six weeks every year, the British flower world becomes briefly obsessed with them. They sell out within hours. They appear in every wedding, every editorial photoshoot and every Instagram feed worth following. And then, just as quickly, they're gone for another year.
But for all their popularity, peonies are also one of the most misunderstood flowers we sell. Customers regularly ask the same questions — how long will they last, when are they actually in season, why won't mine open, why have they wilted already.
This is the guide we wish more people had. Here is everything a florist actually wants you to know about peonies, written from years of working with them in our Manchester studio.
When Are Peonies in Season in the UK?
Peony season in the UK runs from late April through to early July, depending on the weather and the variety.
The exact timing shifts every year. A warm spring can bring British peonies forward into late April. A cooler one can push them into mid-May. By early to mid-July, the UK peony season is generally over — at which point we transition to imported peonies from countries with longer growing windows, including the Netherlands, Israel and parts of South America.
Peonies are not a year-round flower. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something that was likely grown in a way that compromises both quality and ethics.
If you want peonies, May and June are the magic months. Order them then, while they are at their most extraordinary.
How Long Do Peonies Last in a Vase?
A well-cared-for peony will last between 5 and 7 days in a vase from the moment it begins to open.
That said, there is enormous variation depending on:
- The variety (some last longer than others)
- The temperature of your home
- How fresh they were when you received them
- Whether the stems have been properly conditioned
- How quickly the bud was when they were cut
At Amelia Rose, every peony we send is hand-selected at the bud — meaning when your bouquet arrives, the peonies will look closed and almost rose-like. This is intentional. Peonies are meant to arrive in bud. They will then open dramatically over 3 to 5 days, transforming into their full, fluffy, romantic form.
This is also why peonies are one of the most rewarding flowers to gift — the recipient gets to watch the bouquet evolve, almost daily.
Why Won't My Peonies Open?
This is one of the most common questions we are asked, particularly by customers who have ordered peonies from non-specialist sources.
If your peonies aren't opening, the cause is almost always one of three things:
1. They were cut too tight. Peonies need to be cut at exactly the right stage. Too tight, and they will never open. Too loose, and they won't survive transit. This is one of the most skilled parts of growing and sourcing peonies — and one of the reasons we only buy from trusted farms.
2. The room is too cold. Peonies need warmth to open. If your bouquet is sitting in a cold porch or a north-facing room, move it somewhere warmer for 24 hours and watch what happens.
3. They need a little encouragement. If your peonies have been in the vase for 48 hours and are still tight, gently roll the bud between your fingers to loosen the outer petals. This often does the trick. You can also lightly mist them with warm water.
How to Make Peonies Last Longer
Here is what a florist actually does to extend the life of peonies, beyond the basics:
- Trim the stems on a sharp diagonal every 48 hours, taking off 1-2cm each time
- Change the water every two days — peonies are thirsty drinkers and dirty water shortens vase life dramatically
- Use cold water, not warm. Peonies thrive in cool conditions once open.
- Keep them out of direct sunlight — sunlight will force them to bloom and die faster
- Keep them away from fruit bowls — ripening fruit releases ethylene gas which kills cut flowers
- Mist the buds lightly with cool water if your home is dry or you have heating on
If you do all of this from day one, you can comfortably get 7 to 10 days out of a good peony.
The Most Sought-After Peony Varieties
Not all peonies are equal. The variety dictates the colour, the size, the shape and the season.
The most popular varieties we work with at Amelia Rose include:
- Coral Charm — the iconic hot coral peony that fades to peach as it opens. One of the most photographed peonies on the planet.
- Sarah Bernhardt (Pale Pink) — the classic soft pink peony, with a long vase life and an unmistakable fragrance
- Red Charm — deep burgundy red, romantic and dramatic
- Duchesse de Nemours — pure white with a soft yellow centre, an editorial favourite for weddings
If you have a preference, mention it on live chat when ordering. We will always do our best to source the variety you want when in season.
Should You Buy Peonies as a Gift?
Without question, yes — for the right occasion.
Peonies are one of the most generous gifts you can send because they keep giving. The recipient watches them open over almost a week, and during that week the bouquet becomes more beautiful daily.
They're the perfect flower for:
- Birthdays — particularly May, June and early July birthdays
- Mother's Day — if she likes peonies, this is the moment
- Anniversaries — coral peonies in particular feel romantic without being clichéd
- Just because — a thinking of you peony bouquet during peony season is one of the loveliest gestures we deliver
Our hot coral peony bouquet and pink peony bouquet are two of our most popular orders during peak season, and we recommend ordering early in the week if you want guaranteed availability.
A Note on Peony Pricing
Peonies are one of the more expensive cut flowers in the world. This is because:
- They have a short, intense growing season
- They are labour-intensive to grow, cut and condition
- Demand massively exceeds supply during peak weeks
- High-quality varieties like Coral Charm command a premium even at wholesale
A peony bouquet will almost always cost more than the same size bouquet in other flowers. That is the nature of peonies. But for the four to six weeks of the year that they're at their best, there is genuinely nothing in the flower world that compares.
Make the Most of Peony Season
Peony season is short. If you love them, the time to order is May, June and the very beginning of July. Outside of those weeks, the quality and availability drops significantly, and we generally recommend waiting until next season rather than compromising.
At Amelia Rose, our peony bouquets are some of the most sought-after orders we take all year. If you want to be one of the first to know when peony season opens, sign up to our newsletter — we always send our newsletter list early access before the website launches each season.
Peonies are fleeting. That is part of why they are extraordinary.
